King Mo Does a Proust Questionnaire

Note: I wrote this up for the iMPACT Wrestling web site.

In his first fight for Strikeforce, he knocked out an Ultimate Fighter favorite in three minutes. In his second, he became a world champion.

Things have often come fast for King Mo, but not easy. He toiled for three years in division II collegiate wrestling before becoming an All-American in his first year in division I. He overcame four high-quality MMA opponents fighting in Japan before getting his chance to fight in America. And now, after making his name as the wildebeest wrestler with the cinder block right hand, King Mo enters the wrestling ring on iMPACT Wrestling.

Many wrestling fans and MMA fans already know King Mo, the athlete. But what do we know about King Mo, the person? To solve this conundrum we look to that favorite of Vanity Fair magazine, the Proust Questionnaire. Made famous by early twentieth-century French novelist Marcel Proust, the questionnaire is designed to help the reader understand the personality of the subject. In this case, it will perhaps allow iMPACT Wrestling fans learn what makes pro wrestling's new crossover phenom tick.

Doing the things you want to do that make you feel good.

Being stranded in an ocean or in the woods.


3) What trait do you most deplore in yourself?

You tell me.


4) What trait do you most deplore in others?

Selfishness.

I don't judge people. I test them.


6) What is your greatest regret?

I have no regrets. I take the good with the bad.


7) Who or what is the greatest love of your life?

My family.


8) What is your current state of mind?

Happy, crazy, stupid, calm, irrational but rational!!!


9) What is your greatest achievement?

Being a happy man.


10) What is your most treasured possession?

My family.


11) What is your favorite occupation?

Any job that can make you millions!


12) Who is your favorite hero/heroine of fiction?

Heathcliff. He's a cool cat.


13) Who is your hero/heroine in real life?

My mama.


14) What is your favorite curse word?

B****. (I might have chosen f***, but Brad Pitt already chose that.)


15) If you were to die and come back as something or some one, what do you think it would be?

A crocodile. Patient, but deadly.


16) What would you want it to be?

An eagle to be free. Or a killer whale.


17) When and where were you happiest?

I'm happiest with family and friends.


18) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Nothing. But if I had to choose then I'd like to be richer. LOL.

When Flyers Can't Draw Flies

Will Ospreay and Ricochet had a match on May 27 at New Japan's "Best of the Super Juniors" in Tokyo.  Maybe you've heard. It was the talk of the Internet Wrestling Community (IWC) for days after Vader , a Hall of Famer with a tremendous legacy in Japan, Tweeted critically about a choreographed spot early in the match.  Predictably, IWC sentiment sided with the young blood, while a few old fogies (and people who admire old fogies) defended the big man. Overlooked, at least until the June 6, 2016 Wrestling Observer  was perused, was the fact that the match didn't draw.  Patches of seats at the 2,005 seat Korakuen Hall were visibly unfilled during the match, and the announced attendance was a mere 1,505.  The flyers match couldn't draw flies. Tyron Needs Time

It's no secret that UFC is short on star power.  Ronda may be gone.  Conor is definitely on hiatus.  Jon Jones is suspended, and calling him a major star was a stretch to begin with. UFC, which operates more like a pro wrestling promotion than a sports organization, is taking a tried and true tact: they are trying to create new stars. Creating new stars isn't easy, or even simple.  One reason is obvious: nobody knows who the public will embrace.  Another reason is less obvious: people who aren't Chosen can get jealous. Tyron Woodley appears to be a chosen one for UFC.  He accompanied Dana White to the Super Bowl and he has gotten panel time on UFC studio shows.  In many ways, it makes sense.  He wants to be a star.  He doesn't mind hyping his fights.  He is explosive.  His public persona is not reckless. Elite Means Elite

Names matter, and the name "All Elite Wrestling" matters a lot.  The promotion authored by Cody & the Young Bucks and owned by Shad Khan's son will be Elite, or it will die trying. The term "Shad Khan's son" is hardly music to the money man behind All Elite, Tony Khan.  Sons of successful entrepreneurs rarely enjoy discussion of the fact that their dads made a lot of money.  There is a perception that being such a son comes with inherent advantages.  Vince McMahon says that Shane had to work twice as hard to reach his position, but many fans and journalists simply don't believe it.  Dynasties like the McMahons of wrestling or Rooneys of football are spotlighted.  Cases where the family business is not handed down -- the Denver Broncos' present ownership drama, for example -- are ignored.
